During a recent interview with Variety, Kirsten Dunst, who played Mary Jane Watson in the original Spider-Man films, revealed that she was given a “joke” nickname, “girly-girl,” by crew members on set. She explained that at the age of 19, she didn’t say anything because “you just took it” and that at an early stage in her career, before the #MeToo movement, speaking up about sexism in the workplace wasn’t as common as it is today. Dunst has appeared in films such as Lars von Trier’s Melancholia, the television adaptation of Fargo, and Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, for which she received an Oscar nomination. She will soon star in Civil War, a dystopian action film from director Alex Garland, which will be released on April 12.
Several new versions of Spider-Man have been introduced since the original trilogy, including Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in The Amazing Spider-Man, Tom Holland and Zendaya in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and two Spider-Verse animated films from Sony.
