TEMPEST’s Hwarang to “halt activities” following clubbing controversy

TEMPEST member Hwarang will no longer take part in any group activities due to a clubbing controversy, according to Yuehua Entertainment. Late last month, a clip of Hwarang from a fansigning event circulated on social media where he confirmed he had been spotted at a nightclub, stating that he had only gone for the music and “did nothing bad”. Yuehua Entertainment later issued a statement apologizing for any trouble caused, saying that Hwarang was “deeply reflecting” on his visit to the club, and that he would not repeat such actions.

However, the agency announced on March 6th via the group’s official fan café that Hwarang would be “halt[ing] activities” following the controversy and would not participate in promotions for their fifth mini-album, ‘TEMPEST Voyage’. The agency stated that it held discussions with Hwarang regarding his activities going forward but was “unable to restore trust” with the idol, saying it would be “difficult to carry on activities as a full group”.

TEMPEST is a K-pop group, and the controversy around Hwarang’s actions highlights the intense scrutiny placed on idols’ behavior even outside of their work. Fans and media alike closely watch their actions, leading to pressure for them to maintain impeccable behavior 24/7. Hwarang’s situation is not unique, as many K-pop idols have faced similar controversies in the past for their actions outside of performing.

Despite the setback, TEMPEST’s fourth anniversary is approaching, marked for March 12th. While it remains to be seen how Hwarang’s absence will affect the group, fans have continued to show their support and look forward to their upcoming release
