Millie Bobby Brown, widely known for her British accent, left fans puzzled during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. The actress, who moved to Florida with her family when she was eight years old, has retained her British accent throughout her career but appeared to drift into a subtle American accent during her talk show appearance. Some fans went on social media to share their surprise and disappointment about the sudden shift, with one writing, “don’t become American.”
The change in Brown’s accent might also be due to her current commitment to filming the final season of the Netflix series, Stranger Things. During the interview, Brown also shared details about her engagement to Jake Bongiovi. “Jake and I bonded over diving,” she said. “We love diving, we got our diving licenses together. We were on vacation and he said “Mil, you’ve got to be up at 8am, we’re going on a dive.” The ring came as a surprise when he handed her a shell during a dive, and it turned out to be a proposal ring. She also shared a mishap where she nearly lost the ring after trying it on but saved it after Jake dove into the water to retrieve it.
Brown’s latest film, Damsel, directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and written by Dan Mazeau, will be available on Netflix from March 8. Brown stars as a woman who marries a prince, only to realize that she is set to be sacrificed and decides to fight a dragon to survive. It’s an adaptation of the novel The Damsel: An Alan Strang Investigates Mystery by John A. Wood.
While Brown’s accent might still be the subject of discussion, her acting career is well on track. She has been acting since the age of nine and has been nominated for Emmy, Screen Actors Guild, and Critics Choice awards for her performance in Stranger Things. She will also be reprising her role as Enola Holmes in the upcoming sequel of the same name
