The final night of U2’s Sphere residency in Las Vegas was marked with a video of Dave Grohl, the Foo Fighters frontman, singing and dancing along to U2’s ‘Beautiful Day’. Grohl was captured on camera holding a glass of wine. Other guests at the final show included First Lady Jill Biden and Brian Eno. U2 began their residency on September 29 and played at the Sphere in Las Vegas for the first time since September 2023. During the residency, the band performed their 1991 album ‘Achtung Baby’ in its entirety for the first time ever.
The final show also saw the Irish rock band being joined by Daniel Lanois, who co-produced the band’s classic albums ‘The Joshua Tree’ and ‘Achtung Baby’; he played the latter record’s ‘One’. U2 also covered Crowded House’s ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’, and for this farewell performance, they were joined by the song’s writer Neil Finn, albeit virtually. In addition, Bono paid tribute to an emotional Larry Mullen Jr who was in attendance at a show on Friday (March 1).
On the opening night of the residency, the show “truly took your breath away”, according to NME’s five-star review. The band pulled off a dazzling series of technological tricks, including whirring drones whizzing past the audience while everything from giant helicopters to falling letters, widescreen desert landscapes and even a projection of the Sphere itself came hurtling towards the audience.
In another development, it was revealed that the former Nirvana drummer, Dave Grohl, would appear on St. Vincent’s upcoming album ‘All Born Screaming’, playing drums on the single ‘Broken Man’. According to Annie Clark, St Vincent, “Grohl comes in with this absolute reckless spirit and just takes it to the edge” towards the end of the track
