The latest BRIT Awards ceremony, which took place on March 2, broke records as RAYE won a total of six awards, beating the previous record held by Harry Styles, Adele, and Blur of four awards each. RAYE’s win is particularly groundbreaking as 70% of winning acts identified as female or non-binary, highlighting a significant shift after years of criticism of male bias at the awards. RAYE’s awards haul included Best Album, Best Artist, Best Song, Best R&B Act, and other significant accolades.
London-based RAYE had previously spent three years publicly criticising major label Polydor for withholding the release of her debut album. However, her Album of The Year win for ‘My 21st Century Blues’ was presented by her former headteacher from the BRIT school, Stuart Worden, with RAYE bringing her grandmother onstage. In her acceptance speech, RAYE declared that she had always wanted to be an artist and expressed great pride in her album.
Other notable awards presented included electronic music project Jungle’s first-ever BRIT for Best Group and Calvin Harris winning Best Dance Act. Best Hip Hop/Grime/Rap Act went to masked artist Casisdead for his debut album ‘Famous Last Words’. Prior to the event, The BRIT Awards named Chase & Status as its 2024 Producer Of The Year, with performances from Dua Lipa, RAYE, and more.
