Idina Menzel celebrates 10 years since John Travolta’s ‘Adele Dazeem’ blunder at Oscars

American actress Idina Menzel has marked the 10th anniversary of John Travolta introducing her as “Adele Dazeem” at the 2014 Oscars, by singing happy birthday to her on TikTok in a humorous reference to the error. Menzel appeared on stage to perform “Let It Go” from the movie Frozen, which Travolta was introducing when he made the gaffe, which went viral. Posting the video on social media, the actress said: “Happy 10th birthday, Adele Dazeem!”

Although Travolta was widely mocked online for the mistake, he later explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that the producers had changed what was written on the autocue. He also added that he had no time to rehearse it because he was distracted by Goldie Hawn, the actress sitting next to him. Travolta made a joking reference to it at the Oscars the following year while presenting an award with Menzel.

The Saturday Night Fever star made headlines last month when his movie, The Fanatic, which was directed by Limp Bizkit’s frontman Fred Durst and stars Travolta as an autistic stalker, returned to the spotlight for its poor box office performance. The 2019 film made just $3,153 at the box office on its opening day, although it is now available for streaming via Amazon Prime Video.

Menzel has sold more than 10 million albums worldwide and is known for her vocal performances in musicals and animated films such as Wicked and Frozen, among others. She has won a variety of awards in her career, including a Tony for her role in the musical Wicked, and she has also performed at the Super Bowl, the Academy Awards and the Rockefeller Center’s tree-lighting ceremony to name just a few of her appearances
