The Glasgow sex workers whose murders remain unsolved

The murders of four sex workers in Glasgow during the 1990s will remain unsolved, according to a detective. Despite the recent conviction of Iain Packer for the 2005 murder of Emma Caldwell, no one has ever been found guilty of killing Diane McInally, Karen McGregor, Leona McGovern, or Jacqueline Gallagher. Police Scotland said it remains committed to catching those responsible for the crimes. Meanwhile, a probe into the possible fifth sex worker murder found no criminality was involved.

Diane McInally’s body was discovered in Pollok Park, Glasgow, in October 1991. Despite two arrests in connection with her death, no one was ever charged. Karen McGregor’s body was found in the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre car park in Glasgow in April 1993. A man who stood trial for the murder was eventually found not guilty by a jury. Leona McGovern was found dead in the city’s red light district in Glasgow, while Jacqueline Gallagher was killed near a bus stop in West Dunbartonshire. Ms Gallagher, who was a frequent client of the convicted murderer, was found to have suffered over 100 injuries.

The unsolved murders raise concerns for the safety of vulnerable women in society. Det Supt Graeme Lannigan said unresolved murders were never closed and urged the public to come forward with any information about the deaths. Meanwhile, in the case of Emma Caldwell’s murder, the recent conviction of Packer after a six-week trial at the High Court in Glasgow brought some relief to the family. Packer was also found guilty of 33 charges against 22 women, including offences against more than a dozen sex workers. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and was jailed for a minimum of 36 years before he’s eligible for parole
