To commemorate the first anniversary of the death of Pulp’s late bassist, Steve Mackey, Jarvis Cocker, the band’s frontman, shared with followers how the band paid their respects while on tour in South America last year. In an Instagram post, Jarvis divulged that while in Santiago, Chile, in November 2012, Mackey arranged to take the band on a hike in the Andes Mountains. It’s clear that the experience left a lasting impression on the band, as on last year’s return tour, the band decided to retrace their steps and pay tribute to Mackey by attaching his old tie and a badge to a boulder they had encountered during their original hike.
Speaking to his fans on Instagram, Cocker shared precious memories of how Mackey’s contribution to the band and his life will never be forgotten. This includes honoring him during concerts and simply remembering him by having a dance to his music or thinking about him. In July, at Pulp’s Hammersmith Apollo concert, Mackey’s son Marley of Warmduscher joined the stage; it’s clear that the band’s bond remains strong.
The announcement that Pulp will continue to tour for another year came from Jarvis himself, who confirmed that the band will continue until 2025. Pulp will be taking to many of Europe’s biggest festivals, including Way Out West, Primavera Sound, and Falling Leaves Festival, among others.
The death of Steve Mackey in March 2023 was a heavy blow to Pulp and the music world. However, as the messages shared by Cocker and the band have shown, Mackey’s spirit lives on, and his contribution will never be forgotten
