Liam Payne has released his newest single ‘Teardrops’ marking a new direction for the former One Direction member. Released through Capitol Records, the song was written through collaboration with Jamie Scott and JC Chasez and features the rhythmic pop that dominated music in the late 90s and early 00s. Through the lyrical contents of the song, Payne explores heartbreak and the feeling of guilt that comes with letting a partner down for the first time.
Payne remarked that “Teardrops is about the vulnerability of heartbreak and the challenge of overcoming those moments,” adding that this marks the beginning of a new chapter in his life. The song is Payne’s first release since ‘Sunshine’ in 2021 and is the first new single for fans from the singer, whose last album debut was his 2019 ‘LP1’, which featured the hit singles ‘Strip That Down’, ‘Polaroid’, and ‘Familiar’.
Over the past year, Payne has been working with long-time collaborator, Jamie Scott, and last year also saw Payne opening up about a stint in rehab and controversial and viral comments he made about his former bandmates. Speaking to fans, Payne also promises that there is more to come in 2024.
“Maybe your words make sense/I could be the problem, I’m so sorry/I know we could just be friends/But I don’t know how we come down from this softly.” Payne sings in the opening lines before the song gradually builds to an anthemic chorus. ‘Teardrops’ provides an emotional and raw perspective on breakups, with Payne’s emotive vocals making this release something to be enjoyed by all of his fans
