A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday as a boat carrying migrants sank in the Channel, resulting in one death and two people missing. The boat had 50 migrants on board and had gotten into difficulty off the French coast. According to those on board, three people had gone overboard, and whilst one was recovered from the water, they were unable to be resuscitated. Two others could not be found.
French naval ships and helicopters were deployed in response to the incident, and the other passengers on board were taken to safety. The incident was just one of several rescues that took place on that day alone, with a total of 180 people having been rescued throughout the day.
Since Tuesday evening, approximately 10 groups of people had reportedly tried to make the crossing. Figures from the Home Office revealed that more than 2,000 migrants have arrived in the UK so far this year, despite an overall drop in attempted crossings compared to 2022. Over 30,000 migrants still managed to reach the UK coast in 2021 despite the decrease in attempted crossings.
The UK government has been notified about the incident, which occurred in French waters, and French authorities are leading the response and investigation into this tragic event
