Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against the developers of the Switch emulator Yuzu, Tropic Haze, over allegations their software is used to play pirated versions of its games. The claims were made as part of the lawsuit, with Nintendo suggesting that its game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, was downloaded over a million times in the 10 days prior to its official release. Tropic Haze denied any wrongdoing and said that its emulator existed simply to allow console owners to play the games on PC.
Yuzu allegedly enables gamers to play pirated games on Windows, Linux, and Android systems, turning these devices into vehicles for intellectual property infringement. Nintendo has demanded that the emulator be shut down, and is suing for damages for alleged violations.
The lawsuit against the Yuzu creators comes after hacker Gary Bowser was sentenced to 40 months in prison and ordered to pay back £11.45m ($15.9m) to Nintendo for creating devices that allowed users to play pirated Switch and 3DS games. The developer of the cancelled Portal 64 demake said their project was probably doomed from the beginning as it relied on proprietary libraries created by Nintendo.
Nintendo has been slow to adapt to the rise of streaming and cloud gaming and has instead relied on the success of its gaming consoles. The forthcoming Switch 2, which is due to launch in 2025, has been viewed as a response to those two trends.
