Noir Fever Records is a brand new record label founded by Aluna that aims to focus on black, female and LGBTQIA+ artists and celebrate black dance music. The label’s primary focus will be electronic music and identifying the current artists who are driving the genre forward. The launch of this record label is significant in terms of representation for underrepresented communities in the arts.
The first release by Noir Fever Records is an eight-track mixtape by Montreal collective Moonshine, which was released on Friday, February 23rd. The mixtape is titled ‘Fédération Internationale du Bruit,’ which translates to ‘International Federation of Noise’ in English. The mixtape includes works from artists such as Branko, Sango, as well as members of the Moonshine collective, and a new track from Aluna.
The mixtape combines a variety of genres, such as amapiano, Badita, and Jersey Club, with inspiration drawn from African club culture and cinema. According to Aluna’s Instagram post, she issued a letter in 2020 that called out racial inequalities in the dance music industry, but it fell on deaf ears. Creating Noir Fever Records was her response to that disregard for the voices of black, female, and LGBTQIA+ artists.
The creation of Noir Fever Records is a step towards inclusivity and represents a significant moment in the music industry, which has consistently been criticized for a lack of diversity. It provides an opportunity for artists who have been underrepresented to showcase their talents and amplify their voices. It is an excellent platform for black and marginalized artists to have their stories, experiences and art gain more visibility and presence in the industry.
With its focus on black dance music and support of marginalized communities within the industry, Noir Fever Records will ultimately help to create a more representative and just music industry
