A documentary mini-series by Roland aims to shed light on the history of Detroit’s Underground Resistance. Titled “Somewhere in Detroit”: Underground Resistance, Submerge, Techno and the Detroit Way, the mini-series is set to premiere on March 1 and will reveal the history of the collective and the creative culture in Detroit. One of the episodes includes intimate conversations with notable figures from the city’s music scene, such as Mike Banks and Waajeed, co-founders of Underground Resistance.

The label turned collective was first established in the late ’80s by Mike Banks, Robert Hood, and Jeff Mills. Though Hood and Mills left UR in 1992, Banks continued to work with the label. In 2022, UR released three new EPs featuring music from Wavejumpers, Mano De Fuego, and spoken-word artist Mike Ellison.

The collective is known for being politically driven, and in recent years they have reportedly “redirected their portion of the Detroit techno legacy to social activist ends, trading mainstream popularity and financial success for independence and self-determination.” The mini-series aims to highlight techno’s African American roots, along with record label Submerge and more.

Roland, the hardware manufacturer, has shared this mini-series as part of its collection of demo and informational content on YouTube. Other videos in the series include Roland Keyboard Rigs with Sister Bliss and Roland x Ashton Miranda: Musical Mathematics with Ed Sheeran. The trailer is available for streaming via YouTube now
