Authorities have confirmed the presence of two security alerts in Dungiven, County Londonderry, on Sunday morning. Both the Foreglen Road and Curragh Road have been closed since Saturday night, at the junctions with Ballyhanedin Road and Legavallon Road. Cordons remain in place as the investigation ensues, and the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Ch Insp McIldowney asked for public cooperation.
“As we continue with our inquiries, we’re urging the public to be vigilant and ask that you avoid the area. Anyone who sees anything suspicious should call us immediately on 999,” the PSNI emphasized. The nature of the alerts has not yet been publicly disclosed.
Events like this remain rare in Northern Ireland, which has seen great progress over the past two decades with the Good Friday peace agreement seemingly bringing an end to the sectarian conflict that blighted the region for 30 years. Nevertheless, dissident republican groups still pose a threat and have been responsible for a number of fatal attacks on security personnel in recent years.
The security alerts are a possibility of these groups attempting to disrupt ongoing good relations between the UK and the Republic of Ireland following Brexit, and a potential breakthrough towards a united Ireland. The attentions of these groups could also be a response to police raids intended to disarm Republican paramilitaries
