Irish hip-hop group Kneecap appeared on Ireland’s Late Late Show and performed their collaborative song “Better Way To Live” with Fontaines DC’s Grian Chatten. The song had been released in November 2020 and Kneecap explained that the message of the song is about “finding that little spark of joy in the monotony” of everyday life. The band, consisting of Mo Chara, Moglai Bap and DJ Próvaí, also spoke with host Patrick Kielty about their upcoming biopic and their political views.
During the show, the band members wore pro-Palestinian badges and talked about their advocacy work for Palestine. The group said that they wanted to use their platform to highlight the genocide happening in Palestine. They urged Irish people to attend rallies and protests and to support the BDS movement to show solidarity with Palestine.
Television network RTÉ issued a statement later saying that they had asked the band not to wear the badges. The statement also said that the band agreed but later wore them anyway. In response to the statement, the band uploaded a news report on social media and wrote “accurate news report” beside a Palestinian flag seemingly confirming the incident.
The Late Late Show appearance follows a similar solidarity action taken by other notable music acts. British punk rock band IDLES and alternative rockers Enter Shikari both showed support for Palestine at recent concerts. Meanwhile, an upcoming “House Not Hate” march is being planned in London to take place next month to support Medical Aid For Palestinians.
Currently, the death toll in Gaza stands at 29,600 Palestinians, 1,410 Israelis killed, and around 100 Israeli hostages still in Hamas captivity
