Werner Herzog only managed to watch 30 minutes of ‘Barbie’: “Could it be that the world of Barbie is sheer hell?”

Werner Herzog, the famous German director, has given his perspective on the recent phenomenon surrounding the film ‘Barbie.’ During an appearance on ‘Piers Morgan Uncensored,’ Herzog was asked by the host which film he preferred between ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer,’ given the 2024 Oscars are approaching. Herzog revealed that he had only watched the first half an hour of ‘Barbie’ and has yet to watch ‘Oppenheimer.’ However, he shared his initial thoughts on the former and suggested that it could be interpreted as ‘sheer hell’, which he described as an unusual setting for a film.

As Morgan tried to persuade Herzog not to watch the rest of ‘Barbie’ due to the horror he had experienced, the conversation ended on a humorous note. The film has been nominated for eight awards at the upcoming Oscars, with Christopher Nolan’s film competing for 13. Both have been recognized in the highly coveted Best Picture category. The ceremony is scheduled for March 10th, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California.

Oliver Stone, the acclaimed filmmaker, has previously criticized ‘Barbie,’ deeming Ryan Gosling’s involvement a “waste of time.” He condemned Mattel’s CEO’s joking suggestion that he should consider directing a sequel to ‘Barbie.’ In a later tweet, Stone apologized for his comments and claimed his initial understanding of the film had been inaccurate.

Moreover, Carpenter’s opinion of the film was mixed. While praising Margot Robbie’s lead performance, he acknowledged that parts of the plot went over his head. Finally, Francis Ford Coppola praised the success of ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ at the box office as a “victory for cinema.” Both released on July 21st, 2023 in the UK and US
