Watch: Emergency text alerts interrupt bomb press briefing

Residents in parts of Plymouth were issued with a government alert over the weekend, warning that there was a danger to life in their area. The alert was prompted by the discovery of an unexploded German World War Two bomb in a back garden in the city. The bomb was due to be transported to the sea, where it would be safely disposed of.

The press conference with Supt Phil Williams from Devon and Cornwall Police was interrupted as people in the affected area received the government alert. It is not known how many residents were affected by the warning, but it is likely that a large number were contacted.

The discovery of unexploded bombs from the Second World War is not an uncommon occurrence in the UK, with experts saying that there could be up to 10 tonnes of unexploded ordnance lying undiscovered beneath the streets of London alone. The bombs are often uncovered during building work or other excavation work, and pose a significant risk to public safety.

Although the alert issued to residents in Plymouth was necessary to ensure their safety, it is not yet known what impact it will have on the wider community. However, it is hoped that the bomb will be safely disposed of without incident, and that residents in the area can return to their normal daily routines as soon as possible
