UK punk band Idles have scored their second number one album with the release of ‘Tangk’, marking their fifth full-length LP. The record received 85% of its opening week sales from physical formats, topping both the Official UK Album Chart and the Official Vinyl Albums Chart, as well as being the week’s best-selling album in UK independent record shops. This follows the success of their previous album ‘Ultra Mono’, which was also a number one hit.
Idles’ frontman Joe Talbot comments on the release, emphasising the importance of showing the different facets of love, such as empathy and hard work, in his music. Speaking to NME, he says, “I find [love] fascinating and empowering”. Talbot also expresses his comfort in his music’s potential to make a difference in the world, saying, “my music will not make a difference in that way, other than me. I’m comfortable with that.”
Looking to the future, Talbot discusses the possibility of Idles headlining festivals such as Glastonbury or Reading & Leeds, saying that while he wants it, “things like that, you build them up in your head and it goes wrong… every show is important”. Despite not wanting to follow the “Museum of Rock History” cliche, Talbot admires other hard-working artists and musicians such as Dave Grohl and Julian Casablancas, and sees the importance in sustaining his own hard work in order to continue succeeding.
Idles are set to tour ‘Tangk’ throughout 2024, with tickets and more information available via Ticketmaster
