Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine talk ‘Poisoned Ascendancy’ tour and new music: “20 years is a long time to be making an impact”

Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine have announced a co-headline tour that will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their breakout albums, ‘Ascendancy’ and ‘The Poison’, respectively. The world tour, titled ‘Poisoned Ascendancy’, will feature Bullet For My Valentine playing ‘The Poison’ in full at every show, with Trivium doing the same for ‘Ascendancy’. The tour will begin in January 2025 and will be the most ambitious run of shows for both bands. Speaking to NME, Trivium’s Matt Heafy stated that this tour was “an invitation to fans to come and have an epic night with us and sing and rage and celebrate the awesome power of the music”.

The tour was announced during a live-streamed press conference on 22 February 2024, after the bands had teased their fans online. The news was greeted with much excitement from fans, and Bullet’s Matt Tuck promised the run of shows was set to be “the metal tour of the year”. Both frontmen spoke to NME about the tour, with Heafy describing it as “a celebration by the bands to the fans of an important era”, whilst Tuck dubbed it a “well-deserved victory lap”. The tour is seen as a chance for both bands to celebrate their legacies, which have had a significant impact on the modern metal scene.

‘Ascendancy’ and ‘The Poison’ were both breakout moments for Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine, respectively. These albums put both groups at the forefront of the new wave of heavy music that emerged in the early 2000s, alongside bands such as Bring Me The Horizon and Avenged Sevenfold. Tuck reflected on the making of ‘The Poison’, stating that whilst recording the demos for ‘Tears Don’t Fall’ and ‘All These Things I Hate (Revolve Around Me)’ on the same day, he “really did think those two songs were the key to unlocking something special. And they were”. Trivium’s success was less immediate, although Heafy stated that ‘Ascendancy’ has become part of the DNA of modern metal, along with ‘The Poison’.

Despite the pressure to create something special for this unique tour, both frontmen are approaching the tour with confidence. Heafy stated that he and Tuck are “approaching this tour like Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine is one supergroup, all fulfilling the same goal”, adding that moments like when he joined Bullet on stage in the US last year to sing ‘Tears Don’t Fall’ are “inevitable”. Meanwhile, Tuck offered: “We’re going to put a lot of love and passion into building the show. Doing it as a co-headliner and a celebration of those two albums means there’s this pressure to create something even more special. There’s no competition though. Trivium are Trivium, Bullet are Bullet. We’re both just going to do our thing.”

The tour poster features dark and haunting imagery, with an intricately designed skull and snake overlaid on an ominous red background. The poster boasts ‘The Poisoned Ascendancy’ in black lettering at the top, alongside the bands’ logos and the details of the tour. Fans are eagerly anticipating the tour’s arrival, which promises to be a memorable celebration of two albums that have truly stood the test of time
