Moor Mother, also known as Camae Ayewa, has announced her ninth studio album, ‘The Great Bailout’, will be released on March 8th through ANTI-Records. The nine-track album explores colonialism in the UK and the horrors of British slavery, and analyses the ways in which it was paid for and later “obscured”. This marks her third release with ANTI-Records and her ninth solo album to date. Moor Mother combines Afrofuturism across a multitude of instrumentation such as jazz, hip-hop, and beat poetry.
‘The Great Bailout’ features the contributions of Vijay Ayer, Sistazz of the Nitty Gritty, Lonnie Holley, Alya Al Sultani, Kyle Kidd, Mary Lattimore, and more. The nine tracks investigate the themes of displacement and systematic violence. The PTSD of displacement, according to Ayewa, should be the focus of everyone as it is not discussed enough. For Ayewa, as we learn about what is happening in the world, we also have an opportunity to learn about ourselves.
One of the tracks from the album, ‘All The Money’, is already available along with a music video, including samples from Vijay Ayer and Alya Al Sultani. The song questions British landmarks such as St Paul’s Cathedral, Big Ben, and The Palace of Westminster, asking where did they get all the money. The music video focuses on the theme of Black feminism and explores the African-American identity and Afrofuturism, coming together with award-winning filmmaker Cauleen Smith.
Moor Mother will also be performing across the world in the coming days, kicking off the tour with multiple dates in Australia, then headed to the UK in March with stops in Bristol and London before ending in Paris on May 6th.
