Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss has called for conservatives in both the US and UK to be more vocal and proactive in their fight against the left. Speaking at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Maryland, Truss warned that unless conservatives become more active, Western civilization is doomed. She also accused people on the left of weaponizing the court system and pushing their “woke agenda” through schools. Truss was one of several right-wing figures speaking at the four-day event, which has been heavily pro-Donald Trump in recent years.
During her 20-minute speech, Truss sought to criticize the establishment in both the UK and US, stating, “The West has been run by the Left for too long, and it’s been a complete disaster.” Despite being the UK’s shortest-serving PM, Truss claimed that the country still has a conservative government. However, she urged conservatives to “challenge the system itself” and called for a bigger bazooka to be able to deliver policies effectively. According to Truss, conservatives are operating in a hostile environment and need to be more forceful in their approach.
Truss’s views have been met with criticism, with some calling her statements bizarre conspiracy theories unfit for British politics. Daisy Cooper, the deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats, has even called for Truss to be stripped of the allowance she receives for being a former prime minister. Despite the backlash, Truss remains committed to the conservative cause and emphasized the importance of having a Republican back in the White House. While she did not disclose whom she would be backing in the race to be the Republican candidate for this year’s US election, Truss stated, “We need a Republican back in the White House. We need it desperately.”
Truss’s speech follows a trend of conservative leaders worldwide speaking out against what they view as the encroachment of left-wing policies in their countries. From criticism of so-called cancel culture to objections to progressive taxation, conservative leaders are taking heightening their rhetoric to shore up their support bases. Whether this approach will result in greater political success remains to be seen, but for now, Truss and her allies are determined to take the fight to the left
