Jimmy Iovine, co-founder of Interscope Records and Beats By Dre, has had the sexual abuse case against him dropped by his accuser. The anonymous woman, known only as Jane Doe, had filed a summons against the music executive in the Supreme Court of the State of New York County in 2021. Last week, a document was filed in court stating that the case had been “discontinued in its entirety with prejudice,” making it impossible for the woman to refile. The accuser’s lawyer, Doug Widgor, released a statement saying that “the matter was resolved to the satisfaction of the parties.”
While official documents regarding the case are not currently available, it was reported that the summons had accused Iovine of sexually abusing, harassing, and physically assaulting the woman in August 2007. A spokesperson for Iovine issued a statement to Rolling Stone in 2021 stating, “We are quite shocked and baffled by this alleged claim. No one has ever made a claim like this against Jimmy Iovine, nor have we been contacted or made aware of any complaint by anyone, including this unknown plaintiff prior to now.”
Iovine, now aged 70, founded Interscope Records and became CEO of Interscope Geffen A&M before moving on to work with Apple in a $3 billion deal that included the acquisition of Beats By Dre, which he co-founded with Dr. Dre in 2014. In another interview, Iovine shared his opinion on the use of AI in songwriting and production. He highlighted the fact that too many people today make records for TikTok, meaning that all these pop records sound exactly the same. If producers continue to use this formula, he predicts that big hits will be written and recorded entirely by AI technology.
The dismissal of the case comes amid growing numbers of individuals sharing their experiences of sexual harassment and assault in the entertainment industry. While the specifics pertaining to Iovine’s case may not be available, its dismissal may cause other victims to think twice about bringing similar allegations forward
