Cassette sales in the US have seen a slight decrease since 2022, with the total number sold last year being 436,400, making up only 0.41% of all albums sold in the country in 2023. The top five best-selling cassettes of the year were occupied by Taylor Swift and Guardians of the Galaxy. The first volume of Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mixes outsold all others, selling approximately 18,000 copies and taking the top position on the chart.
Taylor Swift’s recently released 1989 (Taylor’s Version) and Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) took second and fifth place, respectively, on the list of the top-selling cassettes of 2023. The former sold 17,500 copies, while the latter achieved 11,500 sales. Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2 made it to number three on the list with 13,000 copies sold, and the third volume of Awesome Mix came in close behind, selling the same number of copies and landing the fourth spot.
Swift recently opened up about the creation process for her upcoming album, The Tortured Poets Department, admitting that writing the album was “really a lifeline” for her. During an ‘Eras’ show in Melbourne, the singer revealed that the album was particularly challenging to make and that writing lyrics has been an important part of getting through difficult periods in her life.
The top ten list of best-selling cassettes of 2023 is completed by Nirvana’s Bleach, Metallica’s 72 Seasons, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Mix, Vol. 1, Barbie: The Album, and Phoebe Bridgers’ Punisher, which sold 8,000, 7,500, 6,000, 5,500, and 5,500 copies, respectively
