Dexter Romweber, the founder of the Flat Duo Jets, has passed away at the age of 57. According to his family, they suspect that his death was due to natural causes, although there is yet to be a medical examination. The Romweber family have asked for privacy at this time while they process their loss.
Jack White, who had a close relationship with Romweber, wrote an extensive tribute post on Instagram, sharing memories and a 2009 track he recorded with the Dex Romweber Duo called ‘Last Kind Word Blues’. White described Romweber as someone who was “rock n’ roll inside and out” and went on to say, “People toss that around a lot, but in Dex’s case it was actually true.”
“Dex was a true tortured romantic, unfairly treated and broken hearted at all times but still hopeful. He was an electrical outlet, an old soul, a vampire, a cave man in a modern age, a WWI trench soldier, a different kind of American, out of luck living on the outskirts of town, lonely even when in a room of thousands.” White continued.
Romweber’s career as a musician was long and varied, performing in a number of bands throughout his life, such as The New Romans and the Dex Romweber Duo with his sister. Dexter’s eccentric performances in the Flat Duo Jets gained the attention of many, including those such as R.E.M. and The B-52s, and would go on to inspire artists such as Cat Power, The Black Keys, and Neko Case.
Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Dexter Romweber during this difficult time. He will be remembered as a pioneer of punk rock music, whose contribution to the genre will not be forgotten
