Steve Wright's Sunday Love Songs starts 'without the chief'

BBC Radio 2 presenter Steve Wright was remembered on Sunday Love Songs with a poignant tribute this week. Liza Tarbuck opened the special episode to pay her respects to the late presenter. She acknowledged that the programme would be going ahead “without the chief” but also read out touching tributes from listeners to the DJ.

Wright was 69 years old when he passed away on Monday. His final show was last Sunday – a pre-recorded Valentine’s Day special. The broadcaster joined the BBC in the 1970s and went on to present shows on both Radio 1 and Radio 2. Wright was also a familiar face on television, fronting Top of the Pops for the BBC amongst other programmes.

Tarbuck spoke of the loss of her “genius friend,” encouraging listeners to light a candle in his memory. She also warned that she may become emotional during the show; however, implored her audience not to apologize for their own emotions.

As a long-standing presenter on Radio 2, Wright’s loss has been felt deeply amongst listeners and colleagues alike. Sunday Love Songs provided an opportunity to pay tribute to the DJ and celebrate the impact he had during his time presenting
