Scottish Labour backs motion for 'immediate ceasefire' in Gaza

The Scottish Labour Party’s conference recently passed a motion requesting an immediate ceasefire in Gaza amid global concern about the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas. Scottish leader Anas Sarwar has been calling for an end to the fighting for months, while Sir Keir Starmer has proposed a “sustainable” solution to the conflict.

There is a great deal of pressure on Starmer to unequivocally support an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Both Scottish Labour MPs are under pressure to support a new vote in Westminster next week, following their abstention from a Commons vote in November calling for an immediate ceasefire.

The SNP has requested that Sarwar instruct Michael Shanks and Ian Murray to support a new motion that seeks to end rocket fire into and out of Gaza, unconditionally release hostages taken by Hamas, restore essential supplies, and establish a pathway to peace. The motion was passed unopposed by delegates and condemned the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, while also recognizing Israel’s right to defend its citizens.

The Scottish Labour motion comes on the heels of a double by-election win for the party in England, despite controversy over parliamentary candidates’ antisemitism. Officials have expressed hope that the victory would bring renewed energy and emphasize the party’s renewed commitment to resolving the conflict in Gaza
