The Stone Roses, an iconic Manchester band, have not made a new album since 1994’s “Second Coming.” Despite reuniting briefly for a tour in 2011, and releasing two singles in 2016, they did not produce any new albums before splitting in 2019. Recently, John Squire, The Stone Roses’ guitarist, explained the reasoning behind the band’s decision to not record a new album during their 2011 reunion tour.
Squire revealed in an interview with The Guitarist (via Music News) that no one wanted to record an album during their reunion tour, so it “turned out to not be that frustrating at all.” He added that had the band recorded a new album, he would have played his guitar in a “more measured and respectful” way. Squire regrets overplaying on “Second Coming.”
Squire will appear on tour with Liam Gallagher next month to promote their self-titled debut album, which reportedly sold out in 30 seconds. They will be joined by Little Barrie and Paul Weller on bass, and Joey Waronker on drums. Meanwhile, Jake Bugg will be a special guest for all shows, except Brooklyn. Gallagher recently shared Mother Nature’s Song, calling it “absolutely beautiful” and “a killer.”
Squire views the upcoming album with Gallagher as an opportunity to let his guitar playing come through and shine. “This is a better guitar performance than the other records – and it should be, given the amount of years I’ve been playing,” he explained.
