Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer has paid just under £100,000 in tax for last year, according to a summary released by the party. Almost half (£44,308) of his bill was due to income tax, while the December 2022 sale of a field partly owned by his father’s estate contributed £52,688 in capital gains tax. This brings the total tax Sir Keir has paid since 2020 to £218,011. The former lawyer had previously declared that he had paid £118,580 in UK tax for total earnings of £359,720 over the previous two financial years.

Last year, the Labour leader had published a summary revealing that he received an income of £79,098 as an MP, along with an additional salary of £49,193 for his role as leader of the opposition, making his income more than £128,000. Furthermore, the summary had included more than £21,000 for legal services in 2020 up until April of that year when he became the Labour leader and ceased taking on legal work. He had also made £85,000 in capital gains in 2022 from the sale of a home purchased with his sister.

Sir Keir had sold a plot of land he had purchased in the 1990s for his parents, who later used it to care for neglected donkeys, for which he had received £275,739. As per the latest tax summary, his total tax bill for last year amounted to £99,431.

While Rishi Sunak has also published the details of his earnings since becoming the UK Chancellor in October 2022, the records show that he had paid over £1.5 million in tax since 2019. David Cameron became the first UK prime minister to publish a summary of his tax returns in 2016, following revelations concerning his late father’s offshore fund. Meanwhile, Theresa May had released her tax return during her campaign to be the Tory leader in 2016 but did not do so during her time as the prime minister. Neither Boris Johnson nor Liz Truss, who held the post for less than two months preceding Mr. Sunak, released their tax returns
