Billy Joel, the American singer-songwriter, recently revealed his dream of forming a supergroup with some of the biggest names in the music industry. In an interview with Howard Stern, he disclosed that he had thought of “putting together” his own band featuring Don Henley, Sting, and John Mayer, with Joel himself as the lead singer and maybe Mayer on guitar. However, Joel also said that the supergroup never came to be since everyone he approached was too busy with their schedules.
While Joel envisions a hypothetical supergroup, he will be touring with Sting in North America this year. Sting will join Joel’s North American tour for select shows in late February, April, and September. Although there is no news yet about the possibility of Joel’s supergroup forming, the rumours of a collaboration continue to swirl. In the interview, Howard Stern urged Joel to contact Paul McCartney to discuss the supergroup idea. But Joel said, “He was in the super-est group of all-time. I don’t have the nerve to do that.” Howard Stern even suggested that Joel and McCartney could write together, but Joel instead said that McCartney’s Beatles bandmate, Ringo Starr, would make a good drummer for the supergroup.
Apart from Sting and McCartney, Joel also mentions other great musicians he would love to perform with, including Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. In the interview, he highlights his good relationship with Sting, whom he has collaborated with several times, and envisions working with musicians who share a similar bond with him in the industry.
Billy Joel’s North American tour dates with Sting include select shows in February, April, and September this year. The tour kicks off in New York City on February 9 and ends in St. Louis, MO, in September. Sting will feature exclusively on these select shows while Stevie Nicks will accompany Joel for other US shows on the tour. Fans eagerly await any news of a potential supergroup coming to fruition, featuring some of the biggest names in music
