Ridley Scott reportedly in talks to direct Bee Gees biopic

Ridley Scott is reportedly in negotiations with Paramount Pictures to helm an upcoming biopic about the Bee Gees, according to anonymous sources close to the project. The film, which is currently without a release date or cast, will detail the lives and careers of the Gibbs brothers: Barry, Maurice, and Robin. Barry is the last surviving member and will be an executive producer, while John Logan, who previously wrote Gladiator for Scott, will pen the script. GK Films will co-produce with Scott Free.

This is not the first attempt at a Bee Gees biopic. The project was first announced in 2019 with Graham King attached to produce. Kenneth Branagh was later named as director, with Ben Elton set to write the script. However, Branagh soon left the project, and March 2022 saw John Carney step in as director. However, Carney left the project due to scheduling conflicts, leading to Lorene Scafaria taking over as director in December 2022.

The Bee Gees biopic is just one of many music biopics that have been announced in recent times. Confirmed for release on April 12, 2024, in the UK and April 11 across Australia is “Back to Black,” a biopic based on Amy Winehouse. The film stars Marisa Abela and outlines Winehouse’s years living in London and her rapid rise to fame. In addition, a biopic based on Michael Jackson, titled Michael, is also currently in production, with Jaafar portraying the late singer and Colmon Domingo portraying his father.

Scott is known for his work in science fiction and thrillers, including such acclaimed films as Alien, Blade Runner, The Martian, and Gladiator, among others. It will be interesting to see how he brings his creative vision to a music biopic
