After a recall petition in the Northamptonshire constituency, a limited recount is currently underway for the Wellingborough by-election. The petition was prompted by Peter Bone’s suspension from the House of Commons for six weeks after breaching the code of conduct for MPs.
Voter turnout was at 38.1%, down from 64.3% at the previous General Election. Candidates required photo ID in order to vote following a change in law last year and the count took place at Kettering Conference Centre. About 90 people were involved in verifying the ballot papers.
Aspirational and middle-class voters located in the middle of the M1/A1 corridor in Wellingborough are seen as ‘swing voters’ who reflect the political mood of Britain. The constituency is known for its residents who have worked hard for their families and their homes and are therefore typical swing voters. Places like Kettering, Corby, Northampton, and Milton Keynes swung to Labour in 1997 but then slowly moved back to the Conservatives. Wellingborough is only 30 miles away from Mid Bedfordshire where Labour recently overturned a 24,600 Conservative majority. If the Conservatives win, it will give them hope in the upcoming general election. On the other hand, if Labour wins, it will be seen as further evidence that aspirational England is on the move.
The Liberal Democrat candidate in the Wellingborough by-election, Ana Savage Gunn, stated that she may have lost her deposit. Candidates lose their £500 deposit if they secure less than 5% of the vote. The Liberal Democrats came third in the constituency in 2019 with 7.9% of the vote. Chesterfield’s Labour MP, Toby Perkins expressed confidence regarding the election stating that “any win would be remarkable” for the party. Meanwhile, Reform UK’s leader Richard Tice and candidate Ben Habib, both present at the Wellingborough count, expressed confidence in the party’s “best ever by-election results” between the votes in Wellingborough and Kingswood in Bristol.
Eleven candidates are contesting the by-election. They include Nick the Flying Brick of The Official Monster Raving Loony Party, Ana Savage Gunn of Liberal Democrat, Ben Habib of Reform UK, Helen Harrison of Conservative, Ankit Love Jknpp Jay Mala Post-Mortem as an Independent, Gen Kitchen of Labour, Alex Merola of Britain First, Will Morris of the Green Party, Andre Pyne-Bailey as an Independent, and Marion Turner-Hawes and Kevin Watts, both Independent.
In conclusion, the ongoing by-election in Wellingborough has political significance as it reflects the political mood of the country. Swing voters who are affluent and have moved out of large cities to better their families are expected to define the result
