Queens Drive reopens

The long-awaited reopening of Queens Drive has finally arrived, following the completion of extensive flood prevention work on the stretch of road. The closure of the road was initially prompted by a tragic incident last August, when a car was caught in heavy flooding, resulting in the deaths of two passengers. The closure was then maintained in order to undertake necessary renovations and upgrades to Queens Drive’s drainage system and flood warning infrastructure.

During the road’s prolonged closure, a wide range of work was carried out, which has included rebuilding various damaged parts of the road, renewing existing drainage channels, and thinning some of the foliage along the embankments. Additionally, cutting-edge sensors have been installed within the drainage channels to monitor water levels and assess when flooding may be imminent. These improvements will enable the council to detect flooding that could be hazardous to drivers’ safety.

Further precautions have also been taken in the form of electronic signs, which have been erected to alert drivers of any upcoming conditions that could cause the road to become impassable. Speaking at the occasion, councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Highways, expressed his appreciation for the local community’s persistence during the extended disruption, saying: “We would like to take the opportunity to thank local residents and road users for their immense patience whilst we have carried out work at this location.”

It is a relief to many that the long wait for the road’s reopening has ended, following all of the safety improvements that have taken place. As we start the official opening of Queens Drive, the community welcomes and looks forward to imminent travelling on the road with greater safety and security
