British actor Samantha Morton and Richard Russell, founder of music label XL Recordings, have released their first single on streaming platforms under the name Sam Morton. The track, called “Cry Without End,” follows two of the duo’s earlier vinyl-only singles, “Hunger Hill Road / Ghosts Are Dancing” and “Supplication / Headbouncing,” which were released in 2023. The song features contributions from Alabaster DePlume, a composer and poet from Manchester.

The song begins with Morton’s delicate vocals, presented a capella, before ghostly instrumentation and ethereal backing vocals enter the mix. A video, directed by Morton and starring her, shows intimate close-ups of her face and eyes. The song’s key refrain is, “If tears could express our frustration, we’d cry without end.”

Morton, a two-time Oscar nominee known for her work in films such as “Minority Report” and “Synecdoche, New York,” first met Russell through an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s “Desert Island Discs.” After Morton chose Molly Drake’s “I Remember” as one of her musical choices, Russell reached out to her and they began collaborating.

Sam Morton has also announced their debut live show at London’s Below Stone Nest on March 25, with tickets available from February 16. The duo will also perform at this year’s End of the Road Festival
