MOTOPOL, a community-run events space located in Copenhagen, is set to close this week as the organisers were denied permission to throw cultural events within the former auto repair shop. The venue opened last year with the approval of municipal authorities, who recognized the demand for more cultural spaces in the city. Despite receiving support from the local council and the landlord, MOTOPOL was given a 14-day notice to close its doors. The farewell party, called “Hello, and welcome to my funeral,” will take place this Friday from 22:PM till late. The tickets cost 150 DKK, and attendees need to sign up via a Facebook link.
The closure comes as a surprise to many supporters and members of the community. The organiser wrote on social media that it’s with a heavy heart that they announce the closure of their venue. MOTOPOL was much more than a cultural space. It was a gathering place for the community, with workshops, concerts, exhibitions, and other cultural events. It was a place where people could come together and enjoy the vibrant culture of the city.
The event features 10 sets from popular performers such as Gavnlig, Anna Logic, and DJ 2LATE. The organisers are encouraging attendees to “join us as we put the fun in funeral, and celebrate the epic, if short lived life of our beloved culture house/auto repair shop.” Despite the closure of MOTOPOL, the community is hopeful for the future. In the meantime, it’s a time to celebrate the memories that were created within the walls of the former auto repair shop.
The closure of MOTOPOL highlights the challenges that cultural spaces face in cities around the world. Many cultural spaces struggle to stay open due to changing economic and political factors. The closure of these spaces often means the loss of a vibrant community gathering place. The closure of MOTOPOL is a reminder of the need to support cultural spaces and invest in the cultural life of our communities
