Fans of the Discworld point-and-click adventure game series may be excited to hear that there’s a possibility of a re-release. Gregg Barnett, who designed the original game, and Rhianna Pratchett, co-founder of production company Narrativia, spoke about the difficulties of remaking the games based on author Terry Pratchett’s whimsical books.

Barnett owns half the rights to the Discworld games, but as Perfect Entertainment has been closed for over a decade, the other 50 percent has reverted to the British Royal Family. “It’s obviously a complicated process when you’re dealing with the crown,” said Barnett, but adding that a re-release “may happen.” However, Narrativia owns the rights to the Discworld characters, but not the games themselves. Pratchett said that if they had the rights, it would be “a whole lot easier.”

Last investigated by Narrativia, the rights were thought to be with Sony, but the company is unsure of their current ownership. While the team would “love” to see re-releases, nobody has spoken to them about such plans. Pratchett explained the lack of new Discworld games by saying that “no one has come to us with the right ideas and the resources to actually make it happen.”

Finally, it has been reported that licensing content from Dungeons & Dragons for Baldur’s Gate 3 has earned Hasbro over £71 million in royalties. Fans of the Discworld and Baldur’s Gate games are no doubt hopeful that Barnett and Pratchett can negotiate the rather complex ownership issues and bring back the beloved games for a new audience to enjoy
