Filmmaker Lilly Wachowski has announced her return to the film industry. Wachowski will direct her first feature film in almost a decade titled Trash Mountain. The movie has been written by comedian Caleb Hearon and Ruby Caster, who will both be making their feature film debut. The project will be produced by Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, Eddie Vaisman, and Julia Lebedev.
The premise of Trash Mountain is centered around a gay man in his 20s who returns from Chicago to Missouri to handle his father’s death and the possessions left behind. The story will be comedic and will bring queer representation to audiences. Wachowski said that queer representation is essential at this time as they are being pushed further into the margins.
Wachowski rose to fame when she collaborated with her sister, Lana, and co-wrote and co-directed the first three films in The Matrix series. Lana recently returned as the sole director of the latest movie in the franchise, The Matrix: Resurrections.
According to Collider, Wachowski commented: “Our amazing writers, Caleb Hearon and Ruby Caster, are a shining light in all this dang darkness”. Trevorrow added: “Caleb Hearon and Ruby Caster are true originals and Lilly Wachowski is a living legend”.
Trash Mountain will be Wachowski’s debut as a solo director. The last film she worked on was Jupiter Ascending in 2015. The movie is set to be a critical step in the right direction for queer representation in Hollywood.
