Liverpool City Council is offering the opportunity for education partners to participate in a business mission to China to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the city’s twinning with Shanghai. The council is planning to lead a high-level education business delegation to the city in June and has created a delegation pack to allow partners to gain access to senior decision makers across government, academic and business networks. The mission aims to support Liverpool-based education, learning and skills providers and businesses in accessing Chinese markets and exporting internationally, whilst also promoting Liverpool as a place to visit, study and invest. The council plans to secure external sponsorship, as well as UK central government funding to cover the costs of business events, meetings, local transport and interpretation.
Delegates will be expected to cover their own international and domestic travel costs in China, accommodation, subsistence and potentially bespoke interpretation services. Applications must be submitted by 1st March and those interested must be able to demonstrate a minimum of a 24-month trading record. The programme, which will last four days, could potentially include an education agent workshop, university collaborations, international school visits, high-level meetings with Shanghai government and education authorities and partner-led activities.
The mission, which is part of the city’s 25th anniversary celebrations of its twinning with Shanghai, had received backing from Liverpool, Shanghai and the UK governments, including the British Consulate General and the British Council in Shanghai. Councillor Nick Small, Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet member for Growth and Economy, emphasised the strength of the Liverpool-Shanghai innovation partnership to bring great opportunities to the local business community. The relationship between Liverpool and Shanghai began through Europe’s oldest Chinese community but is prospering through the close partnerships between universities, particularly with the platform this mission will provide in a range of areas including education, trade, culture, tourism, sports and community exchanges
