Liam Gallagher had planned to take a year off from music before receiving a call from John Squire asking to collaborate. Squire, the former guitarist of The Stone Roses, joined Gallagher on guitar to perform Oasis’ “Champagne Supernova” at his Knebworth shows in 2022, leading to the idea for their upcoming collaborative album. The album will be released on March 1st, and their joint tour sold out within 30 seconds of tickets becoming available.
Before the call from Squire, Gallagher had planned to take a break after his Knebworth shows. However, upon hearing Squire’s ideas, he was immediately on board. Gallagher told Guitarist, “There’s only so much sitting about on the sofa you can do. I love Squire, man. He’s a [an amazing] guitarist, probably the best of his generation. So I’m into it all.”
Meanwhile, Squire had originally been looking for a female vocalist before teaming up with Gallagher. After rehearsing for Knebworth, Squire said, “After the second show, I started talking about how we were going to collaborate, and he said, ‘No, you’re writing it, and as long as there’s loads of guitars, I’m in?’ That was everything I needed to hear.”
As for other news in Gallagher’s world, the Oasis documentary Supersonic is set to be removed from Netflix next month. The 2016 film documents the band’s rise during the height of Britpop from 1993-1996. Gallagher has not commented on the documentary’s removal.
Gallagher and Squire’s album release and tour mark a significant collaboration between two of Manchester’s most iconic musicians. The album’s success is eagerly anticipated by fans, with some hoping it will lead to a full-blown tour featuring both Oasis and The Stone Roses classics
