Cillian Murphy says he would “get really into the detail” of J. Robert Oppenheimer every day on set

Actor Cillian Murphy has revealed that he thoroughly studied every small detail about J. Robert Oppenheimer to accurately portray the father of the atomic bomb in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, Oppenheimer. Speaking at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Murphy said he wanted to focus on the small details of his character, especially as the film will be shown on IMAX. Murphy’s preparation for the role involved extensive characterisation, including details like cigarette stains on his fingers, which delighted festival director Robert Durling.

According to Murphy, his portrayal of Oppenheimer focused on withholding rather than emoting. “I’ve always loved that sort of performance, where more is withheld than revealed,” Murphy replied. “Because I think it gives space for the audience then, in the performance. That’s just a personal preference.”

Oppenheimer has picked up 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Actor for Murphy, alongside Bradley Cooper, Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti and Jeffrey Wright. Murphy has been nominated for his first-ever Oscar and has shared his gratitude for being part of a film that has connected with people critically and commercially. When asked if he’s processed the enormity of an Oscar nomination and what he might have thought when he was starting out, Murphy added: “I think as a youngster it just didn’t seem possible at all.”

In other news, Murphy’s son is also set to make his feature-film acting debut later this year
