Police in Clapham have said that Abdul Shokoor Ezedi, the suspect in a chemical attack on a mother and her two children in January, may have thrown himself into the River Thames. Ezedi, who had been in a relationship with the woman, was last seen on CCTV cameras heading towards the body of water after the assault, which left the woman hospitalised with potential vision loss in one eye. Police have confirmed that no body has been found, but the likelihood is that Ezedi has drowned.
According to police sources, CCTV cameras captured Ezedi “walking with purpose” for a distance of about four miles from the scene of the crime, before reaching the Thames. Officers believe that his behaviour was different upon reaching Chelsea Bridge, prompting them to believe that it was here where he went into the water. The investigation into the attack remains ongoing, however, police have stated that they are not tracking any other suspects at this time.
The attack shocked the local Clapham community, and was one of several similar assaults in the streets of London. In recent years, there has been a growing number of acid and chemical attacks reported in the capital, causing alarm among many of its residents. The use of acid and other chemicals in assaults has been reported to be easier than the procurement of other weapons, and has led to calls for greater control over the sale and purchase of such household items.
Despite the lack of bodies of water in the immediate area of the attack, police have noted the possibility of Ezedi having used a nearby canal as a means of accessing the Thames. The investigation is ongoing
