Michael Matheson, Scotland’s health secretary, has resigned and has been replaced by Neil Gray. Gray previously served as the wellbeing economy, fair work and energy secretary and led Humza Yousaf’s SNP leadership campaign last year.
Matheson resigned ahead of the publication of an investigation into an £11k data roaming bill that he incurred during a family holiday to Morocco. He stated that he did not want this issue to become a distraction from the government’s work.
This reshuffle follows the resignation of Elena Whitham as drugs minister due to health reasons. She will be replaced by Kaukab Stewart, who was elected to the Scottish Parliament in 2021 and has not previously held a government role.
The Scottish Parliament Corporate Body (SPCB) has been investigating whether Matheson made an improper expenses claim and he has been given two weeks to respond to the draft report of the investigation’s provisional findings. Matheson had been a government minister for over 12 years, including almost a year as health secretary.
The full cabinet team will be announced later on Thursday
