PinkPantheress, the 22-year-old British musician, has opened up about how hearing loss has affected her music career in a recent episode of The Louis Theroux Podcast. She spoke about struggling with anxiety, stage fright, and the overnight fame that followed the release of her popular track ‘Boy’s A Liar’.
Despite being able to hear her own voice, PinkPantheress revealed that she had lost 80 percent of the hearing in one ear. She explained that the loss was caused by “the microphone going too near to a speaker”. Initially, she thought it was just an annoying ringing that would go away, but her hearing kept deteriorating to the point where she can no longer hear high-frequency sounds.
Her comments come during National Tinnitus Awareness Week, which aims to raise awareness of the risks of noise-induced hearing loss. Mixmag is running a series of features and guides to highlight hearing damage and encourage the use of ear protection.
With the music industry being a high-risk area for hearing loss, it is important that people are aware of the dangers and take the necessary precautions to minimize the risks. PinkPantheress’s experience is an important reminder that hearing loss can happen suddenly and have long-lasting implications for musicians and music lovers alike.
