Nick Cave and Warren Ellis have been chosen to score the upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic, Back To Black, which is set for release in April 2024 in the UK and Australia. In a press release from Studio Canal, director Sam Taylor-Johnson revealed that Cave and Ellis were her top choice for the job, saying: “Their sensibility as well as understanding of this story has led to a profoundly deep and moving film score.” The duo has already begun scoring, and a picture of them tracking in the studio with Taylor-Johnson has been shared. According to a Variety report, they have already tracked 20-30 minutes of music for the film.
In addition to the score, Back To Black will also feature music from Winehouse’s catalogue, including the hits “Valerie” and “Rehab”. The film will star Marisa Abela as the late singer and outline her rise to fame and the years she spent living in London.
The film has been approved by Winehouse’s estate, but the trailer for the film raised controversy, with some calling it exploitative and insensitive. Close friend and producer Mark Ronson has since spoken out about the film, saying that he had read the script and appreciated how it captured Winehouse’s razor-sharp sense of humor.
