Prince William has expressed gratitude for the public support his family has received since news of his father’s cancer diagnosis was made public. The prince’s comments came during a charity fundraising event for London’s Air Ambulance, where he joked about “getting away from it all” amid a period of heavy media scrutiny for the Royal Family. The prince also name-checked surprise guest Tom Cruise and asked him not to borrow any of the helicopters, given how hard the actor is on vehicles in his movies.
Prior to the charity event, Prince Charles had carried out an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle, where he honoured John Broadfoot, founder of SOS Kit Aid, among others. Photos also emerged of the Prince chatting with Ellen Convery, formerly known as Ellen White, the former England women’s footballer.
While the King will continue his formal constitutional role as head of state, he will step back from public events while undergoing cancer treatment. He was seen at Sandringham in Norfolk after a brief meeting with his son Prince Harry, who had travelled from California. The monarch’s drive to Buckingham Palace, to get a helicopter to Sandringham, was the first time he had been seen in public since his diagnosis was revealed.
It remains unclear what kind of cancer the King is battling, and despite the latest official message being published on Wednesday on the Royal Family’s website, which made no reference to the King’s health, the relationship between Prince Harry and Prince William remains strained, according to reports.
