Former UK Prime Minister, Liz Truss, has launched a new group called Popular Conservative (PopCon) in an effort to restore faith in democracy. Truss stated that democracy had become unfashionable and PopCon was formed to combat this mentality. However, she also cautioned the group that their fight would not be easy, as the left had been making gains in UK institutions, the corporate world, and even on a global level.
Truss called upon PopCon to defend and promote the values of free markets, democracy, and individual liberty. She also emphasized that their mission would be to support the common citizen who has been left behind by society. In her speech, Truss stated that the group’s motto ought to be the decentralization of power, where people had more agency over their daily lives.
Truss remarked that people had lost confidence in the government and its institutions, leading to societal unrest. She blamed the loss of faith on previous governments that made empty promises and failed to deliver results. PopCon, hence, aims to make politics accountable by generating public trust and promoting transparency in policymaking.
PopCon has received mixed reactions, with some calling it a welcomed change while others criticize it as merely a rebranding of the Conservative Party.
