Rapper Meek Mill has expressed his dismay and scepticism over the handling of Killer Mike’s arrest at the 2024 Grammy Awards, calling the situation “propaganda at an all-time high.” Mike, who won three awards at the ceremony, was arrested for reasons that have not been disclosed to the public. Video footage circulated online of Mike being taken away in handcuffs, while he had been named the recipient of Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Album.
In a series of tweets, Meek Mill criticised the awards body and its decision-making regarding black musicians. He noted that Mike deserved more awards and accolades for his contributions to the culture, and that the “timing to award black men be totally off.” Meek also expressed his indifference towards the Grammy Awards, citing that they have “never acknowledged street rappers.”
Killer Mike had earlier spoken to the press backstage at the ceremony, describing it as a “grand” feeling to win three awards. He also addressed comments made by Andre 3000, who criticised his peers of being too old to continue in the rap industry. Mike’s response was: “For all the people out there that think you get too old to rap – bullshit. I don’t care if you’re 78 rapping about how many gals you got in the nursing home. Make sure we keep hip-hop alive.”
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift made history at the 2024 Grammy Awards by winning Album of The Year for the fourth time, solidifying her status with the most AOTY wins in Grammys history
