Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of HBO’s hit drama series True Detective, has given his two cents on the recently released fourth season. The show stars Jodie Foster as a detective investigating disappearances from an Alaskan research station, but has received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. While some fans have speculated about possible links to season one, others have criticized the latest season.

Pizzolatto himself has denied any involvement in the latest episodes, which have been subject to criticism on social media. A screenshot from an Instagram comment section was posted on a Reddit thread, showing Pizzolatto distancing himself from the season and calling one reference to season one “stupid”. In another comment, he clarified his lack of input: “I certainly did not have any input on this story or anything else. Can’t blame me.”

Pizzolatto also seemed to address the possibility of Matthew McConaughey’s return as Rust Cohle, stating, “Matthew doesn’t show up, now would he?” A user responded, “That’s a relief on both accounts.” However, the show’s creator, Issa López, has responded to these comments in an interview with Vulture, stating that the writing team created the story with “profound love” for Pizzolatto’s work.

“I believe that every storyteller has a very specific, peculiar, and unique relation to the stories they create, and whatever his reactions are, he’s entitled to them. That’s his prerogative,” López said. “I wrote this with profound love for the work he made and love for the people that loved it. And it is a reinvention, and it is different, and it’s done with the idea of sitting down around the fire, and [let’s] have some fun and have some feelings and have some thoughts. And anybody that wants to join is welcome.”

Regardless of opinions on the latest season, True Detective continues to be a popular and influential TV show. Last week, Jodie Foster revealed the two movies she thinks everyone should watch at least once, showing that True Detective’s stars have more to offer than just their work on the series
