Kate Garraway praises 'extraordinary bravery' of her children ahead of GMB return

Kate Garraway has spoken out about the bravery of her children in her first appearance on Good Morning Britain since the death of her husband, Derek Draper. Garraway appeared on the show via video call, describing how her family’s emotions were still running high after the funeral on Friday. Draper passed away in January due to COVID-19 complications after a long battle. During the interview, Garraway revealed how “extraordinary” and “beautiful” it was to see her 17-year-old daughter Darcey serve as a pallbearer.

Darcey also delivered an emotional message to her father during his final moments. She reassured him not to worry about her and her mother and that they would be okay because he would always live on through them. In the interview, Garraway described this moment as a “stop the clock” moment. Garraway was able to say goodbye to her husband and had “a chance to hold his hand and smell his skin”, something that she acknowledged that not everyone was able to experience.

Draper’s funeral was attended by celebrities such as Sir Tony Blair, Sir Elton John and Sir Keir Starmer, as well as figures within the political world. The service took place at the Church of St Mary The Virgin in Primrose Hill, North-West London. Speaking about the outpouring of support she received, Garraway expressed her gratitude for the love and messages her family received from unexpected places, including a letter from the Beckhams, a letter from the Royal Family and personal messages from the King.

Despite the difficult time, Garraway was looking forward to returning to the show and connecting with everyone again. Emphasising the need to continue with life, Garraway said it was what Derek would want her to do. During the interview, Garraway also praised the brilliance and skill of the medical profession. She stated that while caring for someone can be incredibly difficult, it is an honour to do so and wished she was still doing it now
