Joni Mitchell gives rare live performance at the 2024 Grammys

The music legend, Joni Mitchell, made her debut appearance at the Grammys on February 4. The 66th Grammy Awards event was held in Los Angeles on that day, featuring several big names including Taylor Swift, SZA, Phoebe Bridgers, and Olivia Rodrigo, all nominated for different awards. Last week, Mitchell was confirmed to make a rare live appearance at the 2024 Grammys, and she performed Both Sides Now, her 1969 song from her second album, Clouds, for the audience. The performance featured Brandi Carlile on the guitar and other musicians including string players.

Carlile introduced Mitchell, paying tribute to her and describing her as “the matriarch of the imagination,” after which Mitchell received a standing ovation. Over the years, the nine-time Grammy Award-winning musician has won several awards including the Best Folk Performance award for Clouds in 1969, and the Best Folk Album award for her 2023 live album, Joni Mitchell at Newport.

The album was recorded during her surprise set at the legendary music festival in 2022, 53 years after her first appearance there. Mitchell performed a 13-song tribute to herself dubbed as “JONI JAM”, during which Brandi Carlile also joined her on the tracks Carey, A Case Of You, and Big Yellow Taxi. After her performance at Newport, Mitchell hosted her first full headline show in over two decades at the Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington State. This year, she will return to the stage to headline two shows at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

The 2024 Grammys also featured several other big names in the music industry, including Killer Mike, who seemingly responded to Andre 3000’s comments about being too old to rap as he sweeped up three trophies at the premiere ceremony. In the meantime, the band Boygenius confirmed their familial bond amid reports of an upcoming hiatus. Stay tuned for more updates from the event as they come
