Boygenius have achieved a stunning early hat trick of awards at the 2024 Grammys, with the trio’s Julien Baker speaking out about the familial bond between the band members and their music during her speech. The group – which also includes Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus – was up for six awards at the ceremony, including Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, Album Of The Year, Best Alternative Music Album, Best Alternative Music Performance, Best Rock Performance, and Best Rock Song. Boygenius took home the awards for Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song, and Best Alternative Music Album, leaving the band still in the running for Album Of The Year, which will be announced during the televised ceremony.
While accepting their first award for Best Rock Performance for their hit “Not Strong Enough,” Dacus spoke about the band’s childhood dreams of earning a Grammy. “We were all delusional enough as kids to think this might happen to us one day,” she exclaimed. Baker added that music saved her life and that “everyone can be in a band,” and further called Boygenius her family. Baker later took the reins during the acceptance speech for Best Rock Song, telling the audience that being in a band and playing music constituted all she ever wanted to do in life, as music was the tool with which she found her family as a child.
Boygenius was also honored with the award for Best Alternative Music Album for The Record. The band’s members had reflected on the moment of learning they were Grammy nominees in an interview with NME during the previous year. Bridgers had also been successful earlier on the night, picking up a Grammy for her collaboration with SZA on “Ghost in the Machine,” which earned Best Pop Duo/Group Performance accolades. Boygenius, meanwhile, reportedly announced their hiatus at a recent surprise show. “We’re going away for the foreseeable future,” fans quoted them as stating on social media.
SZA led the nominations going into this year’s Grammys ceremony, which is being held in Los Angeles. Stay tuned to NME.com to find out each of the winners as they are revealed
